US Population Growth Prospects Corrected Downwards

The population of the United States is projected to keep on climbing beyond 2100. However, the rate of increase that can be expected until 2050 has been significantly corrected downwards over the last couple of years.

As Statista's Katharina Buchholz reports, according to the Congressional Budget Office, 349 million people live in the United States in 2026. In 2050, this is expected to have risen to 364 million. In 2019, previous to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2050 forecast had still shown a U.S. population of 389 million.

As seen in the data, U.S. population projections were substantially impacted by Covid-19, as the country experienced high excess mortality and projections kept being corrected downwards due to this fact. In the years when the pandemic subsided, forecasts showed higher expected population numbers again, while 2025 and 2026 projections trended lower once more. The latest 2026 forecast reached a new low compared to the previous years' ups-and-downs as U.S. net immigration fell majorly in 2025.

As a reversal of low birth rates seem more and more unlikely, immigration continues to keep U.S. population growth afloat. Immigrants have contributed more to it than net births have since the second year of the coronavirus pandemic. At this point, net births (births minus deaths) took a major hit from which they never fully recovered. The Congressional Budget Office expects U.S. net births to turn negative around 2030, at which point only immigration will be contributing to U.S. population growth.

But the U.S. population is not just growing slower, it is also aging in the process. While in 2026, there are 2.7 working-age Americans (25 to 64 years old) per one American aged 65 or over, this will have changed to 2.2 to 1 in 2056 as the big cohort of baby boomers continues to cross this age threshold. As a result, more strain is expected on safety net system like Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid.

EU Eyes 2040 Electrification Target To Slash Oil and Gas Dependence

The European Commission is set to unveil next week an electrification target for 2040 in a bid to reduce the need for fossil fuels and strengthen the renewable energy sector in the EU, according to a draft proposal seen by Bloomberg News.

The Commission, the EU’s legislative arm, is expected to propose on July 17 a target for the share of electrification, still unspecified, as part of the energy consumption in the bloc by 2040.

“With decisive action at all levels, Europe can become the first electro-continent,” the European Commission said in the document seen by Bloomberg News.

“This profound transformation will require investments and lead to savings and benefits well beyond the energy system, from clean tech manufacturers to the installation sector, from more modern and competitive industries to emissions and pollution reduction in European cities.”

Higher electrification rates could help the EU replace two-thirds of its gas consumption and halve its oil consumption, according to provisional EC estimates in the draft proposal.

The expected decline in fossil fuel consumption could reduce the bloc’s energy import bill by a total of $228 billion (200 billion euros), the EC reckons.

The EU’s current electrification rate is about 23% and has been stagnant at around this number for nearly a decade. At the same time, countries like China, Japan, and South Korea have exceeded a 30% electrification rate.

The EU currently has an implicit electrification rate target of 32.5% by 2030, according to estimates by clean energy think tank Ember based on the individual National Energy and Climate Plans.

The EU Electrification Action Plan, expected next week, would contain an “ambitious electrification target,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said earlier this year.

The electrification target is expected to be expressed as a yet-to-be-defined percentage share of energy consumption by 2040, according to the draft document seen by Bloomberg News.

IMF Downgrades Global Growth Forecast Second Time In A Row

The IMF downgraded global growth prospects for the second time this year, saying it expects the global economy to grow by just 3 percent in 2026.

As Statista's Katharina Buchholz reports, in January, this projection had still stood at 3.3 percent. While the downgrade is slight, it still conveys the multiple risks to the global economy currently present. As shocks from the Iran war persist, driving up the price of energy and other traded goods, disinflation has stalled and financial markets continue to be at risk of negative reactions.

The IMF saw a positive aspect in the global AI boom, creating an increase in demand for related technologies.

Two countries upgraded since the last forecast were China and the UK, the latter one on a very low level, however. Other countries where economic growth is paper-thin and decreasing are France, Germany and Japan. All three are expected to grow by only 0.6–0.7 percent each this year. This number was as low as 0.9 percent for the Euro Area and 1.1 percent for Canada, giving rise to some doubts around the economic prospects of developed countries in general. The IMF meanwhile said the global economy weathered the current shocks "better than feared".

The organization also said that global first-quarter growth in 2026 turned out better than expected at an annualized 3.0 percent quarter-over-quarter, slightly above forecast. According to the IMF, the rise in renewable energy use was making economies less vulnerable to elevated energy prices which are currently an issue. The AI boom also helped some countries and territories to achieve better economic growth numbers, but this was mostly limited to Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia. China could also grow more than expected on the back of public investments and a high-tech manufacturing surge. Much of the rest of the world, however, pretty much suffered the negative effects of the current crisis without many upsides.

The IMF concludes that risks to the world economy were more balanced than in April, but still pointed in a negative direction as both peace in the Middle East and gains from the AI boom remain fragile. It also cautions that trade tensions could resurface as a result of war-induced shortages, which would put an additional damper on the economy.

Record High 53% Of Gang Rape Suspects Were Foreigners In 2025 In Germany

The share of foreigners involved in gang rapes hit a record high in 2025, reaching 53 percent. A total of 751 victims were gang-raped in the country. The data comes from a response by the German federal government to a parliamentary request by the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

According to the statistics, 53 percent of the suspects — a total of 574 — did not have German citizenship in gang rape cases. Broken down by nationality, 110 suspects came from Syria, 64 from Afghanistan, 46 from Iraq, 44 from Turkey, and the rest from other

ountries, Focus Online reported.

Among the victims, 80 percent were German citizens.

While the report discloses that 509 suspects came from Germany, data about a possible migration background among German citizens was not recorded separately. Previous studies have shown that when the first names of gang rape suspects are analyzed, a total of 75 percent of gang rapes are committed by individuals with a foreign first name.

The high number of foreigners involved in gang rape cases comes at a time when more and more foreigners have been naturalized as German citizens. Millions of migrants also have dual citizenship and whenever they rape, murder or steal, their crimes are recorded as “German” in the federal crime statistics.

The AfD has demanded that the interior ministry begin breaking down crime statistics not only by citizenship status but also by migration background, which would enable German authorities to determine integration success and crime rates among German citizens with a foreign background.

“Although the issue has been on the political agenda for years, there is clearly a lack of effective political and legal measures to prevent these crimes,” AfD politician Stephan Brandner told WELT.

He also responded to the fact that 72 percent of all solved cases involve a suspect who was already known to the police.

“This demonstrates a blatant failure of the judiciary, security authorities and politics. This requires consistent prosecution, faster procedures, harsher sanctions and – in the case of foreign perpetrators – consistent termination of residence. Only in this way can women be effectively protected from such acts,” Brandner stated.

During a session in the Bundestag earlier this month, Alternative for Germany (AfD) leader Alice Weidel described a case from Nuremberg in which migrants allegedly subjugated underage girls with drugs and forced them into prostitution. Her speech was met with loud interjections in the plenary session, including laughter. According to the official Bundestag minutes, a specific MP, the Left Party’s Katrin Fey, laughed at this specific point in the address.

She then spoke about the consequences of migration policy for internal security. Weidel said that “violent, sexual and crude offenses are not ‘cold statistics,’ but daily companions of fear and ‘concern for our children.”

The AfD chairwoman then detailed the case at the Nuremberg Central Station, where young men from Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and North African countries are alleged to have driven girls between the ages of 13 and 18 from precarious circumstances into drug addiction in order to force them into prostitution.

In March of this year, Jan van Aken, who was serving as co-leader of the German Left Party at the time, claimed that the most prominent cases of gang rape involved all White men during his appearance on a German podcast show hosted by Ben Berndt.
